CCTSO, KDDI, KCME, and Azbil Kimmon to Start Demonstration Test of IoT-Enabled Water Meters

Chukai Cable Television System Operator (Head Office: Yonago City, Tottori; President & CEO: Norihiro Kato; hereinafter called "CCTSO,") KDDI CORPORATION (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Makoto Takahashi,) KCCS Mobile Engineering Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President & CEO: Hyngbae Kim) Azbil Kimmon Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Toshima-ku, Tokyo; President & CEO: Masahiro Uenishi) are jointly going to start a demonstration test on IoT-enabled water meters that automate meter-reading operations from December 2018.

The cooperation will also include studying what features are necessary for meter reading operations and how acquired data can be utilized in addition to existing data on the subscription of the cable TV service that CCTSO offers. This initiative to build a meter reading system using IoT is the first in the cable TV industry and is supported by the Tottori IoT Promotion Lab, hosted by the prefecture.

The four companies will work together to carry out the demonstration and to study ways to provide high-quality services and systems.

*LPWA (Low Power Wide Area)
LPWA is a generic term for wireless communication technology that enables long-distance communication with low power consumption. Such technology is beginning to be implemented worldwide as especially useful for the Internet of Things (IoT).

■ Outline of the Demonstration Test

1. Test period:
From early December 2018 to the end of March 2019 (planned)
2. Test area:
Yonago City, Tottori Prefecture
3. What to do:
a. Testing functions:
- Automatic measurement of pointer values using newly installed smart meters (every 12 hours)
- Transmission of measurement data to the cloud server
- Data management and analysis features on the newly established platform for automatic meter readings
- Data visualization and exporting feature
b. Studying future data utilization:
To proceed with the study on automating the calculation of water tariffs (including linking with the billing system), early detection of water leakage, and optimization of water usage through water pressure management, using newly developed application features to be implemented on the platform.

The ability to grasp meter reading data when necessary is expected to improve the efficiency of meter reading operations and the visualization for customers to help raise awareness of water conservation.
